Strategic Planning sessions can go sideways before, during, or after the workshop. Here is my list of what makes a successful session:
- Before
- having the optimal number and mix of participants
- budgeting for an appropriate session length
- During
- having a session that can be easily understood by all participants
- ensuring the strategic plan is not confused with a strategic marketing plan
- ensuring that every participant has clear roles and responsibilities (i.e. does everyone have an equal vote or are some present for input and information sharing only?)
- ensuring an optimal combination of traditional and creative processes are used
- After
- operationalizing the strategic directions into manageable projects
- Systematically executing the action plans
